Alexander Hawkins is a British composer, pianist and organist whose sound world is shaped by a fascination with composition, alongside a deep love of free improvisation. His musical language extends from early jazz and bebop to free improvisation, contemporary composition and electronic sound. He is a major collaborator, and his work includes important figures such as Wadada Leo Smith, Hamid Drake, William Parker and many more. Sofia Jernberg is an Ethiopia-born Swedish vocalist and composer, who has gained considerable recognition within the Scandinavian and international experimental music scene. She works extensively with non-verbal vocalization, breath, extended vocal techniques and the exploration of the voice as an instrument. She has collaborated with important avant-garde ensembles such as Fire! Orchestra, and sits in an unusual position between contemporary classical music, experimental music, free jazz and improvisation. Their collaborative project “Musho” came to life through a live performance in 2016, which eventually resulted in an album released by the prestigious German label Intakt Records in 2024. Both musicians discovered a shared musical territory in Ethiopian music, using traditional songs from Ethiopia, Armenia, Sweden and elsewhere as material to be transformed, fragmented, stretched and reimagined through their distinctive approaches to improvisation and composition.
